Ivrea is the 2022 Italian Book Capital!
Its candidacy was the best among the sixteen presented: an important goal that marks the start of a new phase for the city, which will be able to add a significant piece to its millenary history, from the first capital of Italia with King Arduino to the capital of technology, innovation and laboratory of the future thanks to the extraordinary experience of Camillo and Adriano Olivetti.
After the events of the first part of the year and the extraordinary success of “The Great Invasion”, here is the official “Opening Weekend” from 17 to 19 June, three days of celebration for a year as Capital, a moment to mark the start of the great festival that will develop in the months to come and that will involve the city through books and reading.
It starts on Friday 17 with the national final of “Incipit offresi”, an innovative opportunity to become a writer and promote reading and writing, a bet based on a few lines, an investment in the author’s potential. The real chance of the initiative is the opportunity offered to aspiring writers to meet and talk directly with the publishers involved in the various stages of the project, make themselves known and tell their idea. Appointment at 5pm at the St Marta Church.
On Saturday 18, “Twelve books for twelve months” opens at the Garda Museum. The third exhibition of the project to enhance the Olivetti art collection features the “strenna” books, born from a vision of Giorgio Soavi (writer, poet and journalist then working for Olivetti) who started the series in 1972. They include, among others, The Adventures of Pinocchio by Collodi illustrated by Roland Topor, Kafka’s The Metamorphosis published in 1973 and illustrated by Jean Michel Folon (who would again contribute to the “strenna” books with Martian Chronicles in 1979), Petersburg Tales by Nikolaj Gogol illustrated in 1987 by Milton Glaser and The Desert of the Tartars by Dino Buzzati from 1974 with illustrations by Enrico Baj.
This will be followed by the “White Night of the Book”, with meetings with authors, live music for all, open shops and literary aperitifs... while a commission chaired by the Torino Chamber of Commerce will decree the best aperitif for Ivrea 2022 Italian Book Capital!
Finally, on the afternoon of Sunday 19, there will be “The magic book parade”, a travelling festival in which music and words will be mixed under the guidance of Cosmo - a singer-songwriter, DJ and record producer from Ivrea - and the Ivreatronic group, a research collective in the field of electronic music. The book parade float will cross the city streets followed by the public: it will be an explosion of colours, sounds, dances and words to mark the start of a year-long celebration.
